Striving for excellence and integrity
in grain produciton

At Wiseman Family Farm, we strive to maximize profit on every acre and be good stewards of the land.  We carefully watch our expenses and attempt to provide as much profit to the landowners as possible.  We believe good stewardship of the land cannot be separated from the profitable production.  If you sacrifice good farming practices for even one year, it can damage the quality of the field for many years to come and begin to drastically reduce the profit as well.
We do not take shortcuts with fertilizer, drainage or weed control, just to name a few.  For instance, in todays age, it's very difficult to have fields without some weeds, and although we aren't perfect, we do our best to keep the fields as clean as possible and sometimes that means doing things the old fashioned way by going out into the field with a hoe and chopping them out one by one.
At the end of the day, we have conceded that if we can no longer farm while keeping our integrity, then we don't need to be farming, and we hope that day never arrives.  So until that day, we continue to look for ways to improve, and expand, our operation

Here are a few of our farming practices

  • We attempt to be in the fields when the soil is ready.  We do our best not to be in the fields when we shouldn't be.  When it is time to go, we intend to move quickly during planting and harvest to get things done during the most optimal time.  There is a very short window when yields are historically at their best and we aim to hit that window.
  • We are actively involved in researching the use of cover crops to limit the use of chemicals, increase soil fertility, maximize drainage and add forage for wildlife.
  • We use a backhoe, safe chemicals and an assortment of hand tools to keep drainage ditches clear of trees and other small noxious vegetation.  This ensures better drainage, allows the crop to not be robbed of important water and sunshine, it aids the ditch structure and limits the spread of weeds.
  • The ability to remove excess water from a field of corn or soybeans is of vital importance.  We spend a large amount of time every year evaluating our ditches and drainage options to ensure ditches are well cleaned out, and any new drainage outlets are put into action.
  • We evaluate what brand of seed we plant every year so as to find the balance of maximizing yield and profit.
  • We continually read articles, attend meetings and speak with other ag professionals about how we can better our farming practices.
  •  While open to changes, we prefer to check new products and processes on a small number of acres before transitioning the entire farm.  We want to make sure the theory works in the real world.
  • We keep trees well trimmed around the edges of fields and in some cases plant an environmentally friendly buffer strip comprised of different grasses, clovers and other such vegetation.  The buffer strip mixtures provide hay for animals, forage for wildlife and saves money by reducing the amount of corn planted that will not produce along a woods.
